Why It’s Hard For Healthcare Startups To Raise Money Funding holds back many healthcare startups, Bailey says. “As an early-stage healthcare company, the barriers and hurdles of entering the businesses are quite high. There are regulatory hurdles. The industry is overall expensive. As an early-stage startup with not a lot of funding or resources, it’s hard to make progress quickly. It takes longer for you to build a compelling company that’s capable of attracting investments. Not to say it’s impossible, but it is definitely harder than in some other industries.”

UTA Professor Invents Breath Monitor To Detect Flu
A professor from The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) has invented a breath monitor that can detect the flu.
Gouma and her team relied on existing medical literature to determine the quantities of known biomarkers present in a person’s breath when afflicted with a particular disease, then applied that knowledge to find a combination of sensors for those biomarkers that is accurate for detecting the flu.

Surge in children being admitted to hospital for sleeping disorders
More than 8,000 children under 14 were admitted into hospital in 2016 with a primary diagnosis of sleep disorder - up from below 3,000 in 2006. The number has steadily increased year-on-year for nearly two decades.
The figures relate to data compiled by the U.K. National Health Service and they have been analyzed by BBC for a special documentary due to be broadcast next week.
